Power cuts

Electricity comes from Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS, "Breshna"), and much of it is imported from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Iran. Cuts are common, especially in winter when demand rises and imports fall.

Paying the bill

  • At a Breshna office or a bank that takes the bill
  • By mobile money: M-Paisa (Roshan), My Money (AWCC), or mHawala (Etisalat) by dialling *711# and choosing bill payments, with your Breshna account number
  • Online, in the five cities where Breshna's online service runs: Kabul, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif, Jalalabad and Kandahar

Prepaid meters

In parts of Kabul, homes have smart prepaid meters: you buy credit (for example 100 or 1,000 afghanis), load it onto the meter card, and use it until it runs out.

When the power goes out

  1. Keep a charged phone and a light ready, especially in winter.
  2. Switch off large appliances so they are not damaged when power returns.
  3. Ask your local Breshna office about planned cuts in your area: there is no published national schedule.
