Passport

Afghan passports are issued by the passport department of the Ministry of Interior in Kabul. Provincial passport offices take applications and send them on to Kabul.

What you need

  • Your tazkira, and a copy of it
  • Passport photos with a white background
  • For anyone under 18: a parent, with their own tazkira

Steps

  1. Go to the passport office in your province, or the passport department in Kabul.
  2. Fill in the application form.
  3. Give your fingerprints and have your photo taken (biometric enrolment).
  4. Take the invoice you are given to the bank named on it, and pay there.
  5. Bring the bank receipt back to the office. You are told when to collect the passport.

Fees

As reported in 2025: about 10,400 afghanis for a ten-year passport (from age 16) and about 5,200 afghanis for a five-year passport. Fees change, so confirm at the office.

Abroad

Afghan embassies and consulates renew passports. The consulate in Dubai renews them online and posts them to you: see how to renew your Afghan passport online. Use only the mission's own website.

The online route at home is the Ministry of Interior's form at passport.moi.gov.af, but you still pay at the bank and go in person.

Never pay an agent to get a passport faster. Pay only at the bank, against the office's invoice.
