School calendar

Afghanistan has two school calendars, set by the climate: one for the cold provinces, where most children live, and one for the warm south and east.

Cold provinces

Most of the country. The school year begins at the start of Hamal (around 21 March) and runs to about Qaws (late November), with the long holiday in the winter months.

Warm provinces

About six provinces in the south and east. The year begins around Sunbula (September) and runs to about Jawza (June), with the long holiday in the summer heat.

Registration

New pupils register at the nearest school before the year starts, with a tazkira (the child's or a parent's). Ask the school office for its dates: they are announced by the Ministry of Education each year.

Since 2022, girls above the sixth grade have not been allowed to attend school. Primary schools, up to grade six, are open to girls and boys.
