Border crossings

The main land crossings out of Afghanistan, where they lead, and what to carry. Crossings close at short notice, so check the day before you travel.

Pakistan

  • Torkham (Nangarhar, towards Peshawar): the busiest crossing. Reported hours about 6 am to 10 pm; crossing takes one to four hours.
  • Spin Boldak (Kandahar, towards Chaman and Quetta): the main southern crossing.

Iran

  • Islam Qala (Herat, towards Mashhad): reported open about 7 am to 6 pm, daylight only.
  • Milak (Nimroz, near Zaranj).

Central Asia

  • Hairatan (Balkh, across the Friendship Bridge to Termez, Uzbekistan): reported open around the clock since 2025.
  • Sher Khan Bandar (Kunduz, across the river to Tajikistan).
  • Torghundi (Herat) and Aqina (Faryab), towards Turkmenistan.

What to carry

  • Your passport with a valid visa for the country you are entering
  • Your tazkira, and copies of both
  • Afghanis and some of the neighbour's currency; exchange rates at the border are poor

Hours above are as reported by travel sources in 2025 and 2026, not official. Ask drivers who make the trip, and follow the news: crossings with Pakistan in particular have closed for days at a time.
