Roads and passes

The roads that matter most, the passes that close in winter, and how to travel them safely. For distances and driving times between cities, see [distances between cities](/en/tools/distances/).

The Salang

The Salang tunnel and pass link Kabul with at least nine northern provinces. In winter, heavy snow and avalanches close it, sometimes for days: in January and February 2025 it closed more than once. When it is open after snow, travellers are told to carry snow chains.

Other high roads

  • Unai and Hajigak passes, on the road from Kabul through Wardak to Bamyan
  • Shibar pass, the other way to Bamyan, through Parwan
  • The Tang-e Gharu gorge, on the Kabul to Jalalabad road: narrow, busy and known for accidents

In winter

  1. Check before you leave: drivers on the route, and news of closures.
  2. Carry chains, warm clothes, water and food for a long delay.
  3. Leave early: passes are safest in daylight.
  4. Fill the tank before the climb; fuel stops are few.

Avalanches on the Salang have killed travellers. If a road is closed, wait: do not follow vehicles going round the barrier.
