The job

Accountabilities

  • Participating actively in the definition and update of the annual planning and budgets of the pharmacy activities in the project.
  • Supervising the functioning and organization of the project central pharmacy and other peripheral units, setting the protocols and procedures to be followed by all staff in order to ensure the quality of the service provided to the population, including pharmaco vigilance in case of need.
  • Defining storage, stock management and supply processes, as well as hygiene and security procedures, tools, and protocols (controlling pests and rodents) in order to ensure good storage conditions (temperatures, humidity and light exposure) and the accurate handling of the products and equipment in terms of hygiene and that all hygiene and security procedures are followed in project pharmacies (cleaning, controlling pests and rodents, etc.)
  • Giving support in the ordering and supply process of medicines and medical devices. Monitoring correct stock management across pharmacies within project area, to guarantee a good control and up to date data of stock levels and avoid expiries, overstocks and stock outs. Reporting on drug consumptions and medical devices dispensed according to protocols, informing on unusual patterns.
  • Ensuring, in cooperation with the project logistic manager, proper maintenance of cold chain and storage conditions (e.g. humidity, temperature, light exposure, cleanliness, pest and rodents control, etc.), and that classification and organization of medicines and medical material meet MAGNA protocols.
  • Ensuring the collection of data for monitoring and surveillance of optimal quantity & quality of medicine use. Supporting activities at service level for effective drug distribution and control, quality prescription (analyzing rational drug use), medicines reconciliation, antibiotic stewardship interventions such as restricted use antibiotic review, follow up of pharmaceutical care plans, patient counseling, good dispensing practices and safe medication practices.
  • Supervising, coaching, motivating and evaluating all the pharmacy staff under his/her responsibility, in order to ensure the strict respect for working procedures and protocols. Ensuring that all pharmacy staff uses required clothes and equipment according to protocols, i.e. white coat, gloves, etc.
  • To define, if needed, training opportunities for the medical staff.
  • Carrying out all the reporting tasks associated to his/her field of action and responsibility, ensuring its consistency and accuracy, in order to support in the relevant decision-making and participating in monthly reports according to guidelines (SitReps, medical statistical reports, etc.)
  • Planning and supervising, in close coordination with the HR department, the associated processes (recruitment, training/induction, evaluation, potential detection, development and communication) of the staff under his/her responsibility in order to ensure both the sizing and the amount of knowledge required.

III.Context Specific Accountabilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the pharmacy unit including drug dispensing, stock handling, and storage conditions.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate supply of medicines to departments and health facilities.
  • Maintain proper documentation of pharmaceutical transactions and patient records, where applicable.
  • Prepare forecasts and procurement plans based on consumption trends and project needs.
  • Coordinate procurement of pharmaceuticals in compliance with organizational and donor policies.
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping and stock control using stock cards or pharmacy software. Monitor drug expiry dates and conduct regular physical inventories.
  • Ensure medicines are stored under proper conditions (temperature, humidity, safety).
  • Ensure compliance with national drug policies and pharmacy laws.
  • Ensure all pharmaceuticals are sourced from authorized suppliers with proper quality certifications.
  • Promote rational use of medicines by training clinical and pharmacy staff.
  • Develop and disseminate standard treatment guidelines and essential drug lists.
  • Support clinical teams in pharmacovigilance and monitoring adverse drug reactions.
  • Supervise and support pharmacy staff, including training, coaching, and performance management.
  • Ensure clear roles, responsibilities, and duty rosters within the pharmacy unit.
  • Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for pharmacy staff.
  • Maintain pharmacy databases and generate periodic stock and consumption reports.
  • Contribute to donor reporting and audits with accurate pharmaceutical data.
  • Coordinate with logistics, procurement, health, and program teams for smooth operations.

Requirements

  • Candidates must have the following qualifications:

Education

Bachelor in Pharmacy from recognized university, Doctor of Pharmacy is preferred (or a related field)

Experience

Language

  • 10 years’ experience in pharmacy
  • Good knowledge of BPHS and EPHS projects, Perfect knowledge of MoPH policies,Good understanding of procurement requirements, in term of relevant documents for suppliers and manufacturers
  • Ability to manage a high workload and meet deadlines on time,
  • Good interpersonal skills, motivation team spirit and positive attitude,
  • Good organizational and analytical skills and IT skills, MS office Word/Excel/Access
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills in English, (significant reporting in English)
  • Fluent Pashto and Dari

MAGNA is currently looking for qualified staff to fill the( Project Pharmacy Manager ) in (Kunduz Province).

II. Background of program

In Afghanistan, MAGNA has established a strong operational presence, particularly in the northeastern and southeastern regions. Since January 2026, MAGNA has been implementing the BPHS/HER AF2 project in Kunduz province, supporting 75 health facilities and more than 500 health posts serving over 1.5 million people. The project focuses on integrated primary healthcare services including maternal and newborn health, child health and immunization, nutrition, communicable disease management, MHPSS, referral services, and emergency preparedness and response activities.

MAGNA also has previous emergency response experience in southeastern and eastern Afghanistan. In 2025, MAGNA implemented emergency health and nutrition interventions in Khost province targeting returnees, displaced populations, and vulnerable host communities through integrated mobile and facility-based services. In addition, MAGNA supported emergency response activities following the Kunar earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, providing emergency medical assistance, nutrition support, essential medicines, and psychosocial support services to affected communities in hard-to-reach areas.
