Opening an account
What you need
- Your tazkira or passport (the original, and usually a copy)
- Two photos
- A first deposit: at Azizi Bank, for example, at least 1,000 afghanis or 100 dollars, euros or pounds
Steps
- Choose a bank with a branch near you. The larger ones include Azizi Bank, Afghanistan International Bank, Islamic Bank of Afghanistan, Ghazanfar Bank and Bank-e-Millie Afghan.
- At the branch, ask to open an individual current account and fill in the form.
- Make the first deposit. You receive your account number, and often a card.
- Ask about internet or mobile banking, and about the daily limit for cash machines.
Good to know
- Accounts can usually be held in afghanis, dollars and other currencies.
- Banks have at times limited how much cash can be withdrawn in a week. Ask what the limit is now.
- Money sent from abroad can arrive directly into an account at some banks: see sending money home.
