Before you go to the border
What to carry
- Your passport with a valid visa for the country you are entering: a tazkira alone is not enough at any crossing
- Your tazkira, and copies of both
- Afghanis and some of the neighbour's currency; exchange rates at the border are poor
At the crossing
- Arrive early: most crossings work in daylight, and queues can take hours.
- Expect fingerprints and a photo on the other side: Iran takes them at Dogharoun.
- Use only the official counters, and pay fees only against a receipt.
Ask drivers who make the trip, and follow the news: the crossings with Pakistan have been closed since October 2025, and others have closed for days at a time.
