Travelling on mountain roads
The Salang
The Salang tunnel and pass link Kabul with at least nine northern provinces. In winter, heavy snow and avalanches close it, sometimes for days: in January 2026 it was closed for about six days in a row. The cards above show the snow on each pass now and for the next two days. When it is open after snow, travellers are told to carry snow chains.
In winter
- Check before you leave: drivers on the route, and news of closures.
- Carry chains, warm clothes, water and food for a long delay.
- Leave early: passes are safest in daylight.
- Fill the tank before the climb; fuel stops are few.
Avalanches on the Salang have killed travellers. If a road is closed, wait: do not follow vehicles going round the barrier.
